Opening Ceremony
Date: March 15, 2017 - April 02, 2017
Time: Pre-show Festivities: 4 – 5 pm, Ceremony: 5 – 6:30 pm
Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC. The gift and annual celebration honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan and the continued close relationship between the two countries
The Festival was expanded to two weeks in 1994 to accommodate a diverse activity schedule during the blooming period. Today, more than a million people visit Washington, DC each year to admire the blossoming cherry trees and attend events that herald the beginning of spring in the nation’s capital.
One of the best ways to take in the sights of any city is by foot, and that’s especially true in Washington, DC at cherry blossom time. With the vitality of spring and pleasant weather, enjoy the trip to the blossoms by foot, with landmarks and statuesque monuments along the way. The cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are short walks from many Metro stations, including:
- Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter
- Federal Triangle
- Foggy Bottom–GWU
- L’Enfant Plaza
- Smithsonian
Biking Several major bicycle trails make their way to and through Washington, DC. The national capital region is extremely bicycle-friendly and readily accessible to riders of nearly every skill level. Maps are available online at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association website.
On weekends during the Festival, the National Park Service will place bike racks at the Jefferson Memorial (southside, parking lot) and at Independence Avenue & 15th Street, SW, close to the Tidal Basin, which bikers with their own locks can utilize for free.
